GA is a game of exchanging resources to get to the top of the food chain. Or to get straight to the point, to win in GA you'll have to attack other players. This is the nature of the game. Everyone attacks, everyone will eventually BE attacked. It's how the game works, so if someone attacks you - don't get upset, just suck it up, rebuild, and get the land back by attacking someone else.

Many newcomers to the game decides that when they're hit, they will pay the attacker back by using what is considered "aggressive ops" against them. These "aggressive ops" are basically the special operations missions Arson Residences, Blow Up Mines and Sabotage Power Plants. Some consider Kidnap Population to be an aggressive mission as well.
What you should keep in mind, however, is that these actions are rarely left unpunished. Aggressive probes will almost always receive punishment of some kind, some may even go as far as trying to kill your account. So basically, try to avoid aggressively probing anyone ;)

Attack types:

Assault - the Assault is the main method of attacking someone in Galaxies Ablaze. To successfully Assault someone, you have to break the defenders defense 100%. For this, you are repaid with 10% of the defenders' land - unless it was a bash.

Raid - the Raid is a method of attacking that is highly controversial. When you perform a Raid, you don't have to break the entire defense of the person you're attacking - your land gain will be less also, and what's more peculiar is that it is calculated by YOUR land, and not the defenders. You can raid people ranging from 80% to 300% of your size, and basically - the more of the opponents defense you break, the more land you gain. If you break your opponents defense 100% in the raid, you will gain 8% of YOUR land in the attack.
While some, including the admins, consider this form of attack to be perfectly legitimate and fair - the majority of experienced players will tell you a different story. While the legitimacy of Raids continues to be disputed, I would recommend that you do not raid - simply because you're likely to get hit back for it.

Plunder - the same as Assault, with a simple modification; you gain much less land and much more resources. Plunders are widely accepted as equal to Assault.

Pillage - it is the same to Raid as Plunder is to Assault. Raid, with less land gain and more resource gain. It holds the same controversy as a Raid, with modifications - they are widely accepted as a means to get to planets with lots of Money (called a "bank") that you can't get to because it's either protected by the Positron Shield, or it has LOTS of ops - making his operative defense impenetrable.

Massacre - to successfully Massacre someone, you must break their defense by 300%. A Massacre will do extensive damage to the target, while the gain for the attacker is slim. Massacres are generally used in wars only.

Language and behavior:

There are certain rules in GA. No foul language, you'll be fined for it - and may even be disabled. You are also expected to behave civilized and polite, DO NOT BE RUDE towards anyone and the atmosphere of the game will be so much better for everyone.

Now that you know you have to be polite and all that, let's move on the the all-important communication aspect of the game :)
